An Overview of the African Private Equity Market

Our June 3 seminar and drinks reception was twice oversubscribed, a testament of the significant interest in the African private equity space. The event attracted delegates from various parts of the UK, Africa and continental Europe The seminar kicked off with an introduction from the chairman and moderator, Luca Del Conte, executive director, MediCapital Bank – a London-based top-tier North African $5bn market capitalisation bank that forms part of the Bank of Africa Group. Del Conte gave a brief market overview and key elements of the private equity landscape in Africa, before introducing the speakers.

Thomas Ferede, an investment professional at London-based African private equity investment group, Development Partners International started the speakers presentation session with a talk on deal making, investment strategy process, portfolio and transaction management. He touched on key elements of identifying investment opportunities, due diligence and the use of key valuation models. Ferede also outlined standard criteria used to select target companies and emphasized the need for deal customization in adverse economic situations.

Kem Ihenacho, partner, Clifford Chance in London built on Ferede’s presentation by analyzing Africa’s investment risks, emphasizing that Africa’s risks are fairly common to most emerging market economies. Ihenacho outlined the risk management process, adapted to the African private equity scenario, detailing risk mitigation tools, including confiscation, currency inconvertibility, and political risks coverage.

Chris West, head of the Shell Foundation, closed off the speaker’s session by focusing on small cap investing, the missing middle, and the role of venture philanthropy in African private equity investment models.

The presentations were rounded off by Paresh Shah, managing director, Stargate Capital Management joining the speakers for a thought-provoking panel discussion.

The evening ended with a networking drinks reception.
